Glossary
Two layers: industry-standard vocabulary defined clearly for founders and operators, and original frameworks developed through methodology and client work. Select any term from the index to read its definition.
When someone asks ChatGPT “who’s the best AI visibility consultant in Detroit,” something comes up. AEO is the work that makes sure it’s you. It’s not about showing up in a list of links β it’s about being the answer. That’s a different game than SEO, and most businesses aren’t playing it yet.
An entity is just a thing the machine has decided is real and worth knowing about β a person, a business, a place. If AI systems have you filed as an entity, they can talk about you with confidence. If they don’t, they either skip you or guess. Most small businesses aren’t entities yet. They’re just words on a page.
Every time an AI reads content about your business, it’s making a decision: is this about a specific, known thing, or is this just generic text? Entity recognition is that decision. If your name, your specialty, and your context are clear and consistent across the web, the machine connects the dots. If they’re not, it doesn’t β and you get lumped in with everyone else.
SEO got you ranked on Google. GEO gets you cited by AI. When ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview answers a question in your space, GEO is the reason some businesses get named and others don’t. The businesses winning right now aren’t necessarily the biggest β they’re the ones the machine has enough information to trust.
Think of it as the machine’s internal map of who’s connected to what. Your business isn’t just a name β it’s a node in a web of relationships: your industry, your clients, your location, your credentials, the publications that mention you. A strong knowledge graph means the machine understands you in context. A weak one means it’s working from fragments.
Before an AI answers a question, it sometimes goes to check the web first β like cramming before a test. That’s RAG. It’s the reason publishing fresh, clear, crawlable content actually matters. If the machine can find updated information about you, it uses it. If it can’t, it falls back on whatever it learned during training β which could be old, wrong, or nothing at all.

Your website says a lot of things. Schema markup tells the machine what those things mean. Without it, the machine reads your page the way someone skims a flyer β picking up whatever stands out. With it, you’re telling the machine exactly what you do, who you serve, where you’re located, and why you’re credible. It’s invisible to your visitors. It’s essential to the machines deciding whether to recommend you.
Machines don’t read the way people do. They look for patterns, labels, and consistency. Structured data is any content that’s organized in a way machines can predict and parse β clear headings, defined terms, schema code, consistent formatting. The more structured your content is, the less the machine has to guess. And the less it guesses, the more accurately it represents you.
Everything an AI model learned before it launched β every article, book, forum post, and website it was trained on β that’s the training data. It’s the machine’s long-term memory, and it’s frozen. Whatever version of your business exists in that data is the version the machine starts with, whether it’s accurate or not. This is why what’s been published about you historically matters more than most people realize.

A zero-click happens when someone asks a question and gets the answer without ever visiting a website. People frame this as a threat β and it can be, if you’re not the one being cited. But if the AI names you as the answer, that’s a brand introduction to a potential buyer who never had to find you. The danger isn’t zero-click. It’s being absent from the answer entirely.
AEO is about getting cited in AI answers. Agentic search is the next level β AI that doesn’t just answer your question but goes out and does something about it. Books the appointment. Compares the options. Makes the purchase. The AI isn’t summarizing anymore; it’s acting as a proxy for the user. For your business, this means visibility is no longer just about being recommended β it’s about being trusted enough to be chosen by a system that’s operating on someone’s behalf without them watching. The businesses that built strong entity foundations for AEO are better positioned for agentic search. The ones that didn’t are invisible in both.
That box at the top of a Google search result that gives you a synthesized answer before you’ve clicked anything β that’s an AI Overview. Google assembles it from multiple sources, writes a summary in its own words, and links to the pages it pulled from. If you’re one of those pages, you get a citation. If you’re not, you didn’t exist for that query. AI Overviews are where a significant portion of search intent now resolves β which means ranking on page one no longer guarantees visibility if you’re not also being cited inside the Overview itself.

An atomic answer is a sentence or two that fully answers a specific question on its own β no surrounding context required. It’s the unit of content that AI systems actually extract and cite. Most content isn’t written this way. It builds to answers, buries the point, or assumes the reader has read the paragraph before. AI systems don’t wait for you to get to the point. They scan for self-contained, extractable claims and pull those. If your content can’t stand alone in one to three sentences, it probably won’t get cited. Write the answer first. Then explain it.

A citation gap is when you show up in traditional search but disappear in AI answers. You rank on Google. But when someone asks Perplexity or ChatGPT the same question, your competitors get named and you don’t. Citation gaps are where SEO equity goes to quietly die. They’re also diagnostic β if you’re ranking but not being cited, the machine has your page but doesn’t trust it enough to stake an answer on it. That’s a signal about entity strength, content structure, or corroboration β not traffic.

A co-citation happens when two entities are mentioned in the same piece of content β not linked together, just referenced in the same space. The machine notices, and over time those associations compound. If your name keeps showing up in articles, roundups, and interviews alongside credible, relevant people and organizations, the machine starts filing you in the same category as them. You don’t always have to engineer it β sometimes earning a spot in the right roundup does the work for you. Both count.

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness β Google’s framework for evaluating whether content and its creator are worth surfacing. Experience asks: have you actually done the thing you’re writing about? Expertise asks: do you know it deeply? Authoritativeness asks: does your field recognize you? Trustworthiness asks: is the information accurate and the source credible? These four signals don’t just matter for Google anymore β they map almost directly to how AI systems evaluate whether to cite you. Sometimes the machine isn’t sure which version of you it’s dealing with. Same name as someone else in a different field. A business name that overlaps with a common phrase. A rebrand that left fragments of the old identity still live on the web. Entity disambiguation is the process of making it unambiguous β giving the machine enough specific, consistent context that it stops hedging and locks onto the right entity. The more clearly you define what makes you distinct, the less likely the machine is to blend you with someone you’re not.

A grounded AI response is anchored to something real β a source it retrieved, a document it was given, a verified fact it can point to. An ungrounded response is the model working from memory and inference alone, with no external anchor. Grounding matters for your visibility because it’s the difference between an AI mentioning you offhandedly and an AI citing you as a source. The more your content shows up as something retrievable and trustworthy, the more grounded β and credible β the responses about you become.

AI systems sometimes generate information that is completely wrong β but delivered with total confidence. This is called hallucination. It’s not the AI lying. It’s the AI filling a gap with something plausible when it doesn’t have reliable information to draw from. For your business, this means an AI could describe your services incorrectly, misattribute your work, or invent credentials you don’t have. The fix isn’t hoping the AI gets it right. It’s making sure you’ve given it enough structured, corroborated information that it doesn’t have to guess.
That information box that appears on the right side of a Google search result β with a name, description, key facts, and related links β is a Knowledge Panel. It’s the most visible sign that Google has recognized you as a real, defined entity worth summarizing. You don’t apply for one. It appears when your entity is corroborated well enough across trusted sources that the machine decides you’re worth surfacing at a glance. Think of it as a report card on your entity strength.

Older search matched keywords. Semantic search matches meaning. Instead of scanning for exact phrases, the machine tries to understand what you’re actually asking β your intent, your context, the problem you’re trying to solve. This is why keyword stuffing stopped working, and why clarity now matters more than density. It’s also why the Ask / Pain Point / Intent framework is so useful: when you understand the difference between what someone asks, what’s actually bothering them, and what they’re really trying to fix, you can create content that answers the real question β not just the surface one.

Topical authority is the machine’s read on whether you actually know a subject β not just whether you’ve mentioned it. It’s built through consistent, substantive, interconnected content on a specific topic over time. One strong piece doesn’t do it. Ten interconnected pieces that reference each other, address related questions, and form a coherent body of work β that does. In AI search, topical authority is one of the signals that makes the machine confident enough to recommend you rather than hedge.

A four-part process for reading market signals before your competitors do. Behavior β watch what people actually do, not what they say they want. Language β decode the gap between what someone asks for, what’s actually bothering them, and what they’re really trying to fix. Undercurrent β track the shifts happening in your industry before they become obvious. Experimentation β test small, learn fast, don’t wait for certainty. Run this process and you’ll find Blue Puddles. Skip it and you’ll keep chasing markets that are already crowded.

Forget blue ocean. You don’t need a massive untapped market β you need a small one where you’re the obvious answer. A Blue Puddle is a specific segment where real buyers exist, but the category is murky enough that the big players haven’t bothered to get clear on it. In AI search, specificity wins. The more precisely you own a niche, the more confidently the machine recommends you for it.

You don’t have to be famous for the machine to trust you β you just have to be associated with people and sources it already trusts. Being quoted in an article next to recognized experts, appearing in a roundup alongside established names, getting cited by a high-authority source β all of it signals to AI that you belong in that conversation. It’s not about who you know. It’s about who appears next to your name.
If you want AI to represent you well, you have to teach it who you are. The Brand Intelligence Stack is the collection of first-party documents that do that teaching β your mission, your audience, your writing samples, your proof points, your language. Think of it as onboarding material, but for machines. You’re essentially loading an AI with institutional knowledge about your brand or organization, and the more complete it is, the less the AI has to fill in the blanks on its own.
Every business has a vocabulary β the specific words, names, and phrases that mean something particular in your world. The Brand Lexicon makes that vocabulary official and consistent. When your team, your content, and your AI tools all use the same words to describe the same things, your ideas stay sharp instead of getting diluted every time someone paraphrases them.
AI systems have two ways of knowing things: what they learned during training (slow, historical, frozen) and what they can look up right now (live, current, updateable). The gap between those two layers is a window β and right now, that window is open. Every month you’re not publishing clear, consistent content about what you do is a month the machine is either guessing or recommending someone else. The window won’t stay open forever.

You probably don’t have a Wikipedia page. That’s fine β but the machine is going to look for something to stand in for it. Compensating Signals is the practice of building those stand-ins on purpose: consistent citations in trade publications, a strong LinkedIn presence, podcast appearances with accurate show notes, schema-marked content on your own site. You can’t have every anchor. But you can make sure the machine always has somewhere trustworthy to land.
One source calling you an expert means almost nothing to the machine. Ten independent sources saying the same thing? That’s signal. AI systems don’t just register that information exists β they weight how many unconnected sources agree on it. This is why publishing once and going quiet doesn’t work. Visibility is built through repetition across diverse, independent sources β not volume on a single channel.
Before you touch anything, you need to know what the machine already believes about you β because it might be wrong, outdated, or contradictory, and fixing it incorrectly can make things worse. Entity Archaeology is that diagnostic: a full excavation of what’s driving the machine’s current understanding of your brand, what’s load-bearing, what’s a ghost, what’s a zombie, and what’s missing entirely. You don’t optimize what you don’t understand.

When the machine’s primary source of information about you goes dark β an article gets taken down, a site goes offline β it doesn’t give up. It works down a chain of secondary sources to reconstruct who you are. The problem is, most businesses have no idea what that chain looks like or where it leads. If you know your Fallback Chain, you can build it intentionally. If you don’t, the machine will build one for you from whatever it can find.
A Ghost Node is a source that the machine learned from during training but that no longer exists on the web. The problem: the machine still carries that information as fact, and the retrieval layer can’t correct it because there’s nothing to check against. Old website gone? Deleted LinkedIn post? Removed press mention? If it made it into training data first, the ghost is still there β quietly shaping how the machine describes you.

When an AI says “may be associated with” or “appears to specialize in” β that’s not caution. That’s a diagnostic. The machine hedges when it’s uncertain, and it’s uncertain when a specific node in your knowledge graph is weak or missing. Learn to read the hedge language in AI responses about your brand and you’ll know exactly what to build next. It’s the machine telling you where the gap is.
You update your positioning, change your title, pivot your offer β and two weeks later, AI tools are still describing the old version of you. That’s identity regression. The machine doesn’t erase what it knew. When the current version isn’t corroborated strongly enough, it reverts to whatever was most established before. Updating your website isn’t enough. You have to replace the old signal with something stronger.

Not all content about you carries equal weight. Some sources are quietly doing the heavy structural work β they’re what the machine is actually relying on to understand who you are. Remove or change one of those without replacing it and the whole representation can collapse. This is the Jenga problem. You don’t know which block is load-bearing until you pull it and everything shifts. Entity Archaeology finds those blocks before you touch them.

You don’t need to be everywhere. You need to be clear in six specific places: who you are, what you do and for whom, who you serve and when, proof that you’ve done it, why you’re qualified, and who else in your space points to you. That’s the MVKG. Get those six nodes right and the machine has enough to recommend you with confidence. Leave gaps and it either hedges or skips you entirely.
Your buyers are telling you what they need β in sales calls, in DMs, in the way they describe their problem. The Pain Points Matrix is the process of actually listening to that language systematically, identifying what keeps coming up, and ranking it by urgency, not volume. The loudest pain in the room is not always the most important one. This diagnostic stops you from building content and offers around what you think people want instead of what they’re actually asking for.
Your website has two audiences: the humans reading it and the machines deciding whether to recommend it. Seen content is what your visitors read. Seeded content is what’s embedded for machines β schema markup, metadata, PDF microdata, hidden fields, speaker notes in your slide decks. Most businesses only think about the first audience. Seeded content is invisible to humans and essential to machines. Ignoring it means you’re only half-visible.
Every AI tool defaults to a generic voice unless you teach it otherwise. Solve for I is the system for making sure that when AI writes in your name, it actually sounds like you β your reasoning, your rhythm, your perspective. It works by feeding AI your own writing, voice recordings, and transcripts as training material. The goal isn’t AI assistance. It’s AI that can represent you without you having to edit everything it touches.
You know what you do and why it matters. Your buyers describe their problem in completely different language. And the machine is looking for something different from both of you. The Translation Layer is the process of connecting all three β turning your expertise into the words buyers actually use when they’re in pain, and encoding that into formats machines can read and act on. Skip this step and your content speaks to no one clearly.
Visibility isn’t a marketing tactic. It’s infrastructure β the same way a phone line or a website is infrastructure. VERB is the approach that treats discoverability as something you engineer and maintain, not something you campaign for. When you build it right, the machine recommends you consistently, without you having to be constantly present. That’s not marketing. That’s a system.
A Zombie Node is worse than a Ghost Node because it’s still alive β still crawlable, still getting read by machines β but it’s pointing to an old version of you. That outdated Alignable profile. The directory listing with your 2019 title. The press mention that describes a service you no longer offer. You often can’t delete these. The fix is to out-corroborate them β build enough current, authoritative signal that the machine learns to trust the new version more than the zombie.

AI systems don’t always connect the dots on their own. A Narrative Bridge is the deliberate act of making those connections explicit β in your content, your bios, your structured data β so the machine understands how the pieces of your story fit together. Without it, the machine might know you’re a founder and know you’re an AI visibility expert but never connect those facts into a coherent picture of who you are and why you’re credible. The Narrative Bridge does that connecting work so the machine doesn’t have to guess at it.

At any given moment, there’s a dominant version of your story living inside AI systems β assembled from whatever the machine found most consistently, most recently, and most authoritatively. Narrative control is the practice of making sure that version is the one you built, not one that assembled itself from fragments. You don’t get it by publishing once. You get it by being the most consistent, most corroborated, most structured source of information about yourself β so the machine defaults to your version every time.

You can have a lot of content about your business and still have a visibility problem β if all that content is telling slightly different stories. Signal consistency is the alignment of what’s being said about you across sources. Different job titles across platforms. Different specialty descriptions in different bios. Old content that uses different language than your current positioning. Every inconsistency gives the machine a reason to hedge. Signal consistency is what turns volume into trust.

Signal density is how much structured, consistent information exists about your entity across the web. A business with strong signal density has its name, specialty, location, proof, and credentials showing up repeatedly across independent sources β all telling the same story. Low signal density means the machine is working from fragments. It might know your name. It might know your industry. But it can’t confidently connect them into a recommendation. Building signal density is the practical, ongoing work behind the MVKG.

The Steg Layer is the machine-readable layer of your digital content β the metadata, microdata, schema markup, hidden fields, PDF document properties, and speaker notes that humans never see but machines always read. Most businesses have no idea what’s living in their Steg Layer, which means it’s either working for them by accident, working against them with outdated information, or sitting empty when it could be doing strategic work. Auditing and intentionally building your Steg Layer is one of the highest-leverage visibility moves most businesses haven’t made yet.

An AI citation happens when a model names you, references your work, or points to you as a source inside a generated response. It’s the moment the machine stakes its answer on your name. Getting cited isn’t random β it’s a function of how well-corroborated your entity is, how clearly your expertise is structured across the web, and whether the machine has enough confidence in you to surface you in response to someone else’s question. This is the outcome all visibility work is building toward.
